for National Nutrition Month® 2017!


As we gradually shift towards healthier eating styles, it is important

to develop mindfulness in our food options and educate ourselves on

proper nutrition.


This month, let’s take time to re-focus our health needs and goals. This

is an important process; however it does not have to be an overwhelming one.                                             

This entails learning to rely on the signals of hunger which will help

us make more intuitive food choices.


Eat What You Enjoy, Just Be Smart About It:  Small lifestyle changes now

will help prevent or even beat chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart


In order to achieve a healthy diet, we need to keep in mind the

common-sense principles of balance, preparation, variety, substitutions,

and moderation.  Here are some tips to becoming a healthier,

happier you in 2017:


  • For a balanced breakfast, try a simple yogurt parfait with whole

    granola and fresh strawberries.

  • Preparation: Invest in some good quality containers and set time

    aside one night per week to plan out your meals.

  • Eat a variety of foods to keep your diet interesting and nutritious.

    The last thing you want is to get bored and potentially turn to unhealthy

    choices more often than you should.

  • We can always enjoy foods we love and find ways to make them

    healthier by incorporating substitutions. For example, try substituting

     avocado for mayonnaise.You’ll get the creamy goodness while giving

    your heart a healthy boost.

  • Moderation: It’s key to long-term health. For example, if you are a

    chocolate lover, opt for dark chocolate that is organic, fair trade and

    and non-GMO.  Every bit counts.



I am sharing one of my favorite recipes to demonstrate that nutritious and

delicious can co-exist!

Healthy Pizza Margherita


  • Whole-wheat dough
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Garlic, minced
  • Onion flakes
  • Parmesan cheese
  • Oregano
  • 1 large tomato, thinly sliced
  • Low-fat or part-skim mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced
  • Basil


  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Knead dough to work out any bubbles. Set in a pan greased lightly with olive oil, and press in minced garlic.
  3. Lay down a base layer of onion flakes, Parmesan cheese, and oregano.
  4. Add tomatoes and scatter mozzarella and basil on top.
  5. Bake 15 to 20 minutes, until bottom starts to turn a golden brown.
